Can any one shed some light on how to install an operating system onto my external hdd

first of all what (os) do you want to install mac linux xp?

i am trying to install xp pro

if your are installing xp onto the external hdd you just install it as you would on the comp but first you would have to change a setting or two in the bios first If you want to start from the external hardrive you will need to enable the boot order correctly in BIOS (it may appear as "unknown device"). then this should allow you to install on the external hdd and boot
