Help removing malware/spyware/virus, etc. from my PC

i have a computer that has "Personal Antivirus" installed on it. I can't get to the TechSpot web page on that computer because the Internet Explorer keeps opening advertisement web pages. How can I remove the viruses, malware, etc.? I have read that some of the "removal programs" are just more of the same. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
