i can not get my disk drive which is a dvd-rw to show up in as a recordable device, i looked in the reg. and it is not listed in the cd burn, when i right click on my computer i see my hard drive and two cd drives this is a laptop so i only have one when i go to disk management i see no drives listed not even my hard drive. i have tried to uninstall the drives and restart but nothing. os is xp it is a gateway laptop

Forgive me if this is stating the obvious, but... You need to have a burning program installed, something like Nero?
The reason I mention this is I expected WinXP to be able to burn cd's natively, but had to install Nero to get there.
I too have an older Gateway (4525gz).

Okay OnTheRoad, I was too hasty...
I have re-read your post, and pondered, and see some possible clues...

when i right click on my computer i see my hard drive and two cd drives
this is a laptop so i only have one
when i go to disk management i see no drives listed not even my hard drive.
i have tried to uninstall the drives and restart but nothing.
Try This for diagnostic purposes...
  • First make sure all your devices (including USB/External devices) are connected and powered on
  • Click Start->Run, enter: msinfo32.
  • Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
  • Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
  • You should be seeing the Device ID and error status string for devices with problems!

Select all (Ctrl + A) and Copy (Ctrl + C)
Open Notepad and paste the information.
Save as a text file and attach to your next post.
