Do you have any idea why so many of the Registry keys are locked?

I need to know specifically what problems, malware related, that you are still having.
  6. Danc20 Newcomer, in training Posts: 42

    Registry Locks
I do not know why the registry keys are locked. Once when I first tried to update to Windows SP3 I could not and I learned that I needed to reset the registry to default (permissions?)? It worked after then, but maybe this could be a reason?

Another possibility could be something with different user accounts installing different programs and maybe it locks the keys for the rest of the users who did not install that particular program?

    Malware Issues
Well the odd request to change my home page affect me every time I use ComboFix during the restart.

I have not checked if I can update or not, but that was a problem that affected me. The updates had to do with .NET Framework and Microsoft Silverlight, but I am assuming that I might not be able to do any updates as it doesn't give me any other options but those updates. I can give you the update numbers if you want.

Background of Malware Issues - Optional if you don't want to read it.

I just wanted to possibly bring up a little bit of history that I think now might be important and maybe I should have said this before.

Before I came to you, and at the start of my troubles I of course could not update. What I found out though later on was that I:

1: Had a Winlogon Notify error (O20 - Winlogon Notify: !SASWinLogon - Invalid registry found).
2: Had Viewpoint Media Toolbar (as you know) and uninstalled it.
3: Think that both of these signified a Vundo virus or a varient of one.

When I was doing online scans (before asking here for help) Panda Security did Swfview.dll (a .dll of Viewpoint) and was labeled as Virtumonde (which is Vundo) and I suspect where Vundo came into my system.

I did a few things, even running VundoFix.

The importance of this is that I just wanted to say I have two old logs - the VundoFix log and the Nod32 log which removed some Win32/Genetik Trojan (which might be a varient or attached to Vundo) among other stuff

Bottom line I just was wondering if you wanted to check the logs. Oddly enough, Vundo Fix did not find anything, but a day or so ago when I was cleaning out .txt's I realized for the first time that VundoFix could not access some folders to scan. System Volume Information being one of them, where Eset caught six Win 32 Genetik Trojans. Anyways, I was just wondering if this might aid you seeing folders that weren't scanned by VundoFix or where viruses were caught possibly linked to Vundo.

I thought I had removed it by removing old java files (with JavaRA) and taking off system restore points and following a tutorial (which VundoFix was a part of), but maybe it is not completely gone? Maybe I should scan again and try to scan specifically in the folders that weren't scanned?

If you want to see my first post the link is here.

Thanks a bunch, sorry if this is any bit stressful,

    Daniel.

Okay, sit back and let me be the stressed one! I will take this up first thing in the morning. I'm beat right now and an going to close down for the night.

    Ha, will do :)

    Sleep easy!
  9. Bobbye Helper on the Fringe Posts: 16,406   +17

Oky, let's not go backwards! It appears that Vundo is no longer on the system.

    As for this: Malware Issues
Explain please>> "change my home page affect me every time I use ComboFix during the restart."
Never assume>> "but I am assuming that I might not be able to do any updates"
Update problem caused by malware are usually only for security programs, which can include Windows updates in general The Net framework problem wouldn't be malware related.

I don't need to see any old logs:

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus scan HERE
    1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    2. Click Start
    3. When asked, allow the Active X control to install
    4. Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
    5. Click Start
    6. Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
    7. Click Scan
    8. Wait for the scan to finish
    9. Re-enable your Antivirus software.
    10. A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.
    ===========================

Download the HijackThis Installer HERE and save to the desktop:
    1. Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
    2. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
    3. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
    4. Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    5. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
    6. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    7. Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
  10. Danc20 Newcomer, in training Posts: 42

Should I try to do the updates? I just didn't want to do it because you said no system changes without your permission.

I'll edit this post and post the logs after I run the Eset/HiJackThis scan.

I am sort of wondering/highly suspicious if this might be something in my ActiveX things or that my Winlogon.exe file is still hijacked? Maybe Vundo is gone but WinLogon is still having issues? There is a SUPERAntispyware tool that resets the winlogon.exe thing, but just making you aware of that if you are not already, I won't use it without your permission.

I have other irregularities with my system, but I am not sure it is necessary to explain. Can I try an Ad-aware scan?
  11. Bobbye Helper on the Fringe Posts: 16,406   +17

Daniel, please let's continue with what I outline for you. And don't edit the post with the logs because I won't get notice of a reply with an edit.

Just run these, I'll check the results and we'll see what the status is then. You are going off in too many directions.

My mom was on her user account with the scheduled Avira scan on when both of these scans/logs were made, hope that didn't affect anything.

Please reopen HijackThis to 'do system scan only.' Check the following as instructed:

Check all of the 018 entries, beginning with:
    O18 - Protocol: bw+0 - {54F67789-B3C8-46E8-900E-F36752A7916F} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll
    ......................................check all through..............................
    O18 - Protocol: offline-8876480 - {54F67789-B3C8-46E8-900E-F36752A7916F} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll

(NOTE: do not click on Fix Checked until you have checked all of the 018 entries)
Close all Windows except HijackThis and click on "Fix Checked."

Reboot the computer. Empty the Recycle Bin.

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility on either of the following links:
    Link 1
    Link 2

Run the Tool and remove all entries for Logitech Desktop Messenger
    Empty the Recycle Bin.
This is an auto updater that just litters your system. It frequently causes a problem when trying to do in Add/Remove Programs. Use Windows Explorer> My Computer> double click Local Drive> Programs> do a right click> Delete on the Program folder.

    Repeat HijackThis scan.

Cool, everything went fine except for uninstalling it via windows installer, it was not on the list probably due to me removing it from the regular add/remove list since that uninstaller wasn't working. Stupid move maybe, sorry. All is deleted though.

Please reopen HijackThis to 'do system scan only.' Check each of the following, if present: Note: the entries in green are optional. None need to start when you boot and run in the background. The entries can be checked in the HJT log, then unchecked on the Startup menu and the services (023) set to Manual Startup type:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all Windows except for HijackThis and click on "Fix Checked."
    ===============================
The following are additional optional functions to speed up the system by stopping unneeded processes from starting on boot and running in the background.

    For your convenience: Legend:
Service name in HijackThis entries are underlined
Startup entries asre usually the last part of the entry,, after the \ and before the .exe
Optional Removal entries are in green

To remove entries from Startup using the msconfig utility:
    • Click on Start> Run> type in msconfig> enter>
    • Click on Selective Startup
    • Choose the Startup tab:
This is where you UNCHECK the Startup items. This does not remove the item or uninstall anything> it just stops it from starting on boot. It can be rechecked at any time if wanted.
    • To expand the Command Column, (this shows what the process 'belongs' to) hold left mouse button down on the dividing line on frame above Location and move to the right to expand.
    • Click on Apply> OK when finished.

    NOTE:
The first reboot after making changes using the msconfig utility brings up a nag message that can be ignored and closed after checking 'don't show this message again.' Once you make changes to the Startup menu, you must remain in Selective Startup to retain those changed.

To change Service Startup type: (Service name is underlined in the 023 line)
    Boot into Safe Mode
    • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
    • Select the Safe Mode option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
Click on Start> Run> type in services.msc> enter
    • Find the Service and double click to open.
    • Change the Startup tyep of each listed in the HJT log to Manual
    • When finished, Exit Services and Reboot into Normal Mode.

Now these Services will only run when needed, not started automatically on boot then run in the background. Please note: this instruction is only for those Services I have listed.

I ran HiJackThis, it fixed it all and then said it had to restart. I restarted, checked MsConfig which had nothing in there and then I rebooted into safe mode. When in safe mode some services said disabled, but I checked them all to manual. As you will see though, the services (023's) popped back up on HiJackThis. Should I attempt to remove them again now that the services are not automatic?

    I kept:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\ReaderReader_sl.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

O23 - Service: Creative Service for CDROM Access - Creative Technology Ltd - C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTsvcCDA.exe

The startup seemed a bit faster, thanks :)

HijackThis just removes the entry that is running. If a Services is set to Automatic, if it's set to Manual or if there is an entry in the Registry to start a process, it will restart when you boot. If a process is on the Start menu, it will start again on boot. It's okay like you have it. I would take the camera and printer process off of startup though.Neither needs to run unless you want to use it.

Are we okay on the original problems? This log is clean. You can remove the tools we used:
Removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
    • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
    • Click START> then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
    • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
    • Click "System Restore".
    • Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
    • Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
    • Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
      [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
[*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
      [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
[*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

    Empty the Recycle Bin

Let me know if you have any more questions.

This time when I tried to update it got 10 out of 13 updates sucessfully finished and I could not even see these 10 updates before. The other updates, the original three (the 2 .NET framework and Microsoft Silverlight) did not sucessfully update although this time it actually got through part 1 of 2 on one update.

If there is nothing more that can be seen and the logs look clean then I am assuming the other updates are just because of software issues. Thanks for all your help and extreme patience. You have made my computer faster, free of any known baddies and set my mind at ease. Thanks a lot, I could not do any of this without your help!
