HJT log help..

I don't know if this is the right forum for this?

I noticed in my HJT log, that there are alot of "file missing" entries at the end of the log. Should I be concerned and is it ok to remove those entries? My system (win 7 64) is running fine.

If you just want the HJT entries checked, I can do that for you. But you have used and outdated version of HijackThis, Please remove it and delete the log, then go on with the following:

First, set up a Directory for HijackThis as follows:
Right click Start> Explore> My Computer> Local Drive (C)> File> New> Folder> Name folder HijackThis
Exit Explorer
You now have a folder C:\HijackThis
----------------------------------
Download HijackThis and save to your desktop.

• Click on the HJT icon> 'Extract all files'> Extraction Wizard> Click on Browse to right of dialogue box that says 'Select a folder'
• Extract it to the directory on your hard drive you created C:\HijackThis.
• Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
• When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
• The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
• Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please remove the version you have now- don't update. You need to set up the directory as instructed. It will retain backups if anything needs to be restored.

Why do I install it to the "C" directory instead of c:\program files (x86)? Is there a reason? Does the directory make a difference?

This section corresponds to XP,NT, 2003, and 2003 services. HijackThis cannot scan this section in a 64bit OS. So you can disregard all of the file missing entries.

When I boot up the system and the desktop loads, I noticed that all (6 ) of my program icons in the system tray (next to the clock) don't load. I get the network, power,volume icons but nothing else. I should see 6 icons for my security and other start up programs I have loaded, but they don't show. I have to go and click on the program icons on the start menu to get the icons to show. Or I have to reboot the system three or four times before the program icons will show. The system works fine otherwise. The security programs run fine when they are loaded, so they are not the problem.

Regarding this part of your description:

Program shortcuts shouldn't be in the Notification Area. That is for running processes. It sounds like you're using it like the QuickLaunch Toolbar. Try this:
Add the Quick Launch Bar to the Taskbar in Windows 7

But make sure the antivirus is on the Start Menu. It should be one of the 'always show' icons because it is a running process.

Let me know if this resolves your questions about 'file missing' and 'missing' program icons.

Thanks for the help. I think I will leave the HJT log/files as is. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. LOL!
As for the Task bar icons. It seems that the problem is the Explorer.exe initializing to quickly (?).
I will look into modifying the registry with that .bat file and see what happens.

BTW, thanks for getting rid of the my extra posts.

I'll let you know if I have sucess or not.

Please explain. Are you referring to Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer?

I meant to ask you what those programs were for the 'missing icons.' Could it be that you mean the Win 7 feature of pinning the buttons to the Taskbar like this>

The Notification Area where the clock shows is not shown above. It would be to the far right.

You need to make sure the programs you are missing are check on the Startup Menu:

• Click on the Windows Start icon at bottom left of screen
• Type in msconfig> enter>

• Click on Selective Startup
• Choose the Startup tab:

• To expand the Command Column, (this shows what the process 'belongs' to) hold left mouse button down on the dividing line on frame above Location and move to the right to expand.
• Look for the processes for AVG, ZoneAlarm, SpeedFan and other other missing icon programs> if not checked, Check now.
• Click on Apply> OK when finished.

NOTE:
When you reboot the system the first time after making changes using the msconfig utility, a nag message comes up that can be ignored and closed after checking 'don't show this message again.' Remain in Selective Startup to retain those changes.[/QUOTE]

If any still don't show after you have established they are checked on the Startup Menu, open each of the programs and look their configuration options. Be sure 'show in Systray' or something similar is checked- if available.

Also: do a right click in Notification Area> Properties> Click on 'Hide icons when inactive'> Customize> Make sure each of the icons are set to Always show

Note: You have to click on the 'hide icons when not active' in order to Customize. You override that by changing the individual dialog box.

Ok. I made a few registry changes yesterday. I am still testing to see if I get anymore Tray Notification icon problems. Will let you know if I have any success.

Ok Here it is. I seem to have found the problem.

A program that I use for FSX (game) is causing the "tray notification icon" problem. It's weird. After I run the program (ADE.EXE) and then reboot, I loose my "tray notification" icons. When I defrag the drive, then the problem gets fixed. It's the only solution for now. I have to post this problem in a few FSX forums and see if there is a solution. Reinstalling the program did not fix it either. The program is set to run as administrator.

Ok I think I have it fixed. It seems that the "run as administrator" feature was not staying selected for the ADE program (ADE.EXE). Everytime I would close ADE it would turn off RaA.
