How do I use CAB SDK?

Have you looked in your bios to see if you can change the 1st boot device to anything usb related?

    1) Does your computer support booting from USB?

Usually, if its an option in your BIOS boot sequence menu, the answer to this is yes. If its not there proceed and see what happens ;-)

    2) Sorting out the "Bootability" of your USB-Drive

Connect your USB drive to your computer, directly, without a Hub. Then, shut down your computer, disconnect any other hard disk drives from it, and insert your original Windows XP CD into the drive. Start the installation, and proceed to the section where you are allowed to pick a hard drive. If it goes beyond the partition selection, your drive is already fine for booting Windows XP.

Also you could try removing your other hard drive from the bios since you can't unhook it. If you need any explanation on how to do so let me know.

    I will keep looking around.

It figures I would mess up one of the simple edits of the files haha. Sorry about that.

Yes I set the USB Hard drive to boot before the Internal Laptop Hard Drive in the BIOS. It boots from the External Drive but all I get is a black screen. I had managed to get to the XP loading page before but then It would crash and give me the BSOD. I will try again though with another XP installation Disk.

Ok, I am still looking around for causes/fixes. Will report back when I find something.

Alright I have tried again with a different disk but no luck... let me know if you find anything... once again I am running a laptop on Vista. If you need to know the model its HP Pavillion dv9000. Thanks for your help and hopefully we can find a way to accomplish this mission. Maibe we have been going at it wrong. Maibe we need to focus on making Vista recognize USB Windows XP boot and not interfere?

    CAB SDK problem

    Hello everyone
I am having the same problems as Adros mentioned earlier about using the CAB SDK files. I have tried to follow your guide nobardin but can't get it to work!! Let me exlain what happens, I have extracted the files that are needed (from the ISO) to a suitable folder on the hard disk. I then used the run, cmd prompt and navigate to the folder. ... so far so good. Then in your instructions there is mention of a folder called BIN - I haven't got that?!!??? I have tried typing in carb x USBSTROR.IN_ and all that happens is the command prompt says that carb is not recognised. Can anyone help please? Is there a simpler way to use these CAB files? Thanks
    Dan

Hey danielbh download CAB SDK from microsoft's webpage here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310618

Now unzip the file and open the folder; you should see a BIN folder, so far so good?
You have to open cmd prompt and navigate to that folder like explained in the guide by nobardin, then use the cabarc x USBSTOR.IN_ to extract the inf. file. Good luck.

    Andros,

I haven't forgotten about you. I have been busy lately and haven't had time to sit around. I will be able to spend some more time researching soon.

Have you had any luck with anything?

I am now trying to see If I can get it to boot properly with VistaBootPRO 3.3. Hope I can figure this program out, I am burning a new Iso... I'll check back later.

No luck. I've been trying countless times now, but the installation just wont go all the way through. Either the .inf is wrong of the .ini file does not recognize or the usbboot has a invalid line.(so far 1 and 3) It is not working for me. Let me know what you think I should do.
  10. nobardin Newcomer, in training Posts: 260

I am going to extract the files and edit them again now that it's not 3am and i'm not sleepy.

I will also continue to look for a way to fix this.

Just to make sure, You have tried setting your USB device to the 1st boot device and removed your other hard drive from the boot sequence and the bios? Then tried to install your normal windows xp cd on it. Not the edited ones?

It seems that if you can set a USB device (not floppy) as a boot device, and your bios recognizes the usb device it should work.

    Edit

I emailed the new files to you. Let me know if they work.

hey nobardin yea I tried installing xp countless times using the edited files and once with unedited files. Never worked for me. I have set the USB Drive to boot before the Internal Drive, and I cannot unattach internal Drive because I am running on a laptop. Opening it is out of the question since I have warranty on it. I will try using the new edited files you sent me, I just have to work up some patience to go through the process for the 10th time :_)

I understand that you can't open the laptop up to disconnect the internal hard drive. However, if you remove it from the boot sequence completely then remove it from the bios (the part where it lists all of your drives) it should be like taking the drive out.

I also understand that you are low on patience, but just stick with us here and we'll get this sorted out or come to the conclusion that it can't be done on your laptop.

I have read a few posts that say some laptops just wouldn't seem to do it even with unhooking the internal hard drive. I have not given up yet and am looking still and reading stuff over and over trying to see what I may have done wrong.

I'll continue looking around and will keep you informed on my progress.

Ok, I have tried installing XP again; no errors, black screen at USB Booting(Internal Hard Drive set to boot last even after Network Adapter that has an Exclamation mark next to it). Now what I am thinking Nobardin is if it would be wiser to install XP on my D: partition of my internal drive, instead of installing it on my USB Drive. The problem I had with this is that XP setup does not recognize my C or D partitions when I try to install XP, it only recognizes the USB Hard Drive. Do you think we should switch focus on how to get Win XP setup to recognize my D partition for XP installation?
  14. Andros_Forever Newcomer, in training Posts: 23

YES! Finally the installation went through and WinXP started the Setup Wizard! I finished that, and WinXP started! Hip hip hurray :D
I used the second set of files that you sent me and they worked, finally I can boot off my USB Hard Drive. Now there are still some issues at hand. WinXP does not recognize my Internal Hard Drive as being there... that is odd. Also much of my hardware is not functioning properly, such as my Sound Card, Video Card, and most imporntatly my Network Card are not installed. In the Device Manager many icons have yellow ? Icons next to them, what can I do to fix this?

You can try getting the drivers for your laptop here http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=Pavillion+dv9000&submit.x=9&submit.y=7 Make sure you select the right one from the list. I put in what you stated earlier HP Pavillion dv9000 and thoes are the results I got.

I figured if either of them would work it would have been the second set.

As for your laptop not recognizing your internal drive. I will look into that and let you know what I find/figure out when I do.

    Edit
Do you know if your internal drive is SATA or not?

When you have installed all the drivers for your laptop If the internal drive still isn't showing let us know.

I have went to the Driver download page for my model and downloaded all hardware drivers for my system. When I try to install them on XP though, the installer says "Installer for Vista only". I went to the Driver page again, this time under Windows XP, but all the Hardware drivers are missing from that page. Here is the link for the XP Drivers: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&dlc=en&product=3439705
While here is the link for the Vista Drivers:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3439705&dlc=en

Any ideas on how to install the Hardware on XP now?
  18. kimsland Ex-TechSpotter Posts: 18,353

    That is strange
Unless Xp automatically finds all these drivers, and that's why they are not supplied.

But if that's not happening, then I'd suggest contacting them (link previously supplied) and ask them where's all the drivers (or specific drivers) are.
