How to transfer info from HDD on old PC?

  1. A friend of mine needs to transfer the contents of a hard drive on an old PC to a portable HDD. He isnt very technically minded, and lives miles from me, otherwise I would slave the hdd and do it that way. He does own a portable HDD, but obviously this has a usb lead which is not compatible with the old PC, since it doesnt have a usb connector. Is there a straightforward way of connecting the two, say with a serial to usb connector, or similar?

Any advice would be more than welcome!

Nope, no straightforward way. Some more methods:

An IDE HD enclosure with PC parallel port interface
Another computer (with USB) and a network connection
An USB controller card. (PCI or PCMCIA)

Damn... didn't think it would be that easy!!

Perhaps I had better get him to parcel post it up to me, much simpler!

Thanks very much indeed for your speedy help!
