HP DV8000 no audio device detected

    Hi i have a HP DV8000 notebook , I have upgraded to windows vista , I downloaded the vista driver from the HP website and the sound was fine , about two days ago the sound was gone , theres a red x over the speaker icon , and a yellow triangle over the high definition audio device in the device manager , I have tried to update driver and when the driver starts installing it comes up with no media device was found , its like my sound chip has just dissapeared , when i float my mouse over the red x on the desktop it says no audio output device is installed , any help would be appreciated , it seems more like a hardware problem than a software problem , the sound went after i installed a newer hdd that didnt work so i reinstalled the old hdd and thats when i discovered no sound , the machine has two hdds ,

    List any Problem Devices
    • Make sure devices are connected and powered on
    • Click Start->Run, enter: msinfo32. Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
    • Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
    • If yes, click on it, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy it, Ctrl-V to paste into next post
    • On the other hand, if no devices are listed, tell me so
    Generate and attach a DirectX report
    • Click Start->Run, enter dxdiag and click OK
      ===> If you’re running 32 bit Windows, dxdiag will launch on its own
      ===> If you’re running 64 bit Windows, you’ll see 64-bit DxDiag. Click it to launch the 64-bit version of dxdiag
    • Notice progress in lower left window corner
    • When done, click Save Information button and save to your Desktop
    • In TechSpot window, use the paper clip icon to attach the report. (If you don't see icon you may need to first click Go Advanced)

    Just a quick update for now: The good news is it looks your sound hardware is OK and, in fact, both connected and detected by Windows

    thankyou so very much , would a reinstall of windows help ? another thing to mention is on the dv8 it has quik play buttons on the console and also three other buttons , one is volume down and next in line is volume muted then volume up . now all three of these lights are lighted up , and they never used to be , when you mute the sound the blue light goes on and when unmuted it goes off , not sure if this helps .

    1) A reinstall MAY help (but don't know if you still might end up where you started if something else is also going on - so i'll still look at another couple things before i'd give up)

    2) Thanks for providing the extra info on the buttons but don't know just how they might behave on your model. IN GENERAL (at least based on what i've seen in the past) the audio driver only provides for the sound speakers/jacks. Audio button controls have always been related to something else

    3) Just to double check, is this the HP driver you've been trying to install? Conexant AC-Link Audio Driver (that's what i come up with for Vista 32-bit on the HP dv8000)

    I had a suspicion that "something else was going on" (and the things i wanted to look for).... and AH-HA!!

    i'll explain... (fyi.. in case this info might also help anyone else reading this thread in the future)

    Every driver install includes an INF file.
    The driver's INF file tells windows how to install the driver AND what Hardware and Compatible IDs the driver supports. Driver install error messages like "Could not find media device for the driver" usually means the IDs defined in the driver's INF file don't match any of the IDs Windows detects on the target computer. This can occur if either
    > The media device failed so NO media hardware device is detected OR
    > The driver is not compatible with the actual media hardware on the computer

    ==> Note: For either of the above cases, none of the IDs in the INF file will match any IDs Windows finds on the target computer. So you can get an error message similar to "No device found"

    And guess what! I just downloaded that sp34567.exe driver package from HP and inspected its embedded INF file. That driver is NOT a match for your hardware! (In fact, that driver is for AC97 audio not HD audio. (you have HD)

    So i wonder if this might be a driver "update" that is, in fact, just plain WRONG! Will post back after i have a chance to take a further look!

    All the above meaning, in short:
    1) That driver will definitely NOT work with your hardware
    2) I'm not at all surprised to see the driver install error message you reported. In fact, 1) explains it!
    3) HP has made a mistake on its driver download page!

    I just recalled your first post. Are you sure you downloaded this same driver the first time??? If only that the one i found and downloaded on the HP site today is definitely not the right one for HD audio

    ok yay i finally have sound , i downloaded software from HP that detected pc health , and it come up with the wrong driver , it automatically updated a couple of drivers and i now have sound , thanks for all your help ,
