A friend of mine has an A open dvd burner that isn't that old and has seen very little usage (it has burned maybe 4 dvd's and a couple of cd's in its just over a year lifespan).
It stopped reading all media and of course was unable to burn either.
I stripped it apart in order to have a look.
I noticed that the media motor made a very odd noise when spun by hand.
My friend went out and got a cheap secondhand A open cd burner, i stripped the motor out of that and put it in the dvd burner and it works fine again.
I actually said i doubted if it would fix the problem. How wrong was I!!
