Intel revenues up, Centrino is a success

As the chip industry heads into what analysts say will be a year of strong growth, Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, is expected to post between $8.5 billion and $9 billion in revenue, when it presents fourth-quarter earnings Wednesday. That could top Intel's best-ever quarter of $8.73 billion in the third quarter of 2000.

Analysts attribute Intel's revenue growth to the success of its Centrino chips for laptop computers, an early cycle of personal computer replacement in business and the less-noticed success of chips used in low-end computer servers.
