Intermittent bootup

I'm trying to resolve some issues with a pc I looked at today, the main problem being intermittent bootups, sometimes it will boot up Ok but sometimes it boots to the XP splash screen, the small blue blocks move across the screen as normal and then stop and start moving very slowly ie about 1 - 2 mins to move across the screen. You can leave this for some time without booting into windows. After numerous reboots it will usually boot up eventually. Sometimes if you switch off at the wall and then restart it works OK.
So far I have ran several scans for malware, ran chkdsk, carried out checks of memory and hard drive but all apppear to be fine.
Once into windows XP Pro it works without any issues.
The spec is dual core 2180 processor, 1GB memory, ASUS Intel 945 mobo.
This problem seems to have been going on for several months now but appears to be getting worse.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Not yet, I am trying to avoid that option at the moment as its a business pc with a lot of programs on it and a lot of info to backup first, it has been in the back of my mind though.
