Internet stops working on dynamic and static IP

Like i said, i was with virgin last year and no problems. Only thing thats changed is the router so my guess is that is the problem.
I can get to the router set up screen and can ping it but not any internet sites like google.
Not paying for static no but as dynamic is a complete failure with my routers current problem i have no choice but to use static for now and deal with the random connection losses every few days.
My other belkin works fine so i'll probably go back to that after uni, though i might not even need wireless then.
I'll try rebooting but i've done that once, including deleting the old settings and re-entering them, and it still isn't working.
Thought i'd post just in case it was a glitch that could be fixed but if its a faulty router, all i can do is replace it.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions to help narrow it down to the broken router

When you reboot (power cycle) the router you should NOT have re-enter any settings. and/or swtich to static. Leave it as Dynamic and simply power on and off. If this helps it is just a temp fix and still a pain in the **** as you should still replace the router. Leaving it as Dynamic should retain the same WAN IP since your modem is still on. It's your modem that is assigned a WAN IP by your ISP (virgin).

What i meant was i tried power cycling the router and it didnt work so i thought that when i set up the router that it may not have worked properly so i reset the router by holding the power button for 10 seconds and then restarted it. It had returned to the factory default and i set it up again, same problem.
Unless the setup failed both times then it must be just a faulty router
