I use both programs on my system, thank you.
    Please explain this:
"You have to be careful what you said about dell. It does provide the xp drivers."
There are 29 current drivers for Vista, 19 for XP.
    This is what I said:
"3.There are not all the XP drivers available that may be required"

So what are you getiing at?
    Dismissed.

The subject of this thread is a desktop, not a laptop.

2GB of RAM is plenty for vista pal...you should be just fine :)

You caught me with my pants down, sir.

    *winks*

There is only way to do this
install most xp driver and leave the missing driver... use either everest or belarc to find the rest, such as Intel Chipset drivers ... :)

Yes its fine. Run Vista, XP will involve more effort. Vista deals with multimedia stuff better than XP anyway (nicer photo thing (very much like picasa), importing and tagging of digital cam pics, VHP has Media Center which is worth the purchase of the whole OS if you ever want to connect to a TV for picture/movie viewing/tv recording).

2 Gigs is great, 4 gets you into a grey area with a 32bit OS and ultimately you are wasting money. 3 gigs prevents you from running in dual channel mode which sacrifices speed. 2 is perfect. Your HD space is plenty, unless you are recording HDTV.

Stick with xp and avoid those "Are you sure your sure your really really sure that you clicked the left mouse button to install this program" and " windows vista will now pause to give you time to think about it".. im not a vista fan as you can guess.. And dont get me started on documents and settings!!! Otherwise i think youre all good to go :)

It comes with Vista. XP isn't even an avaiable option on Dell's site. So I'm not even sure you could convince Dell to give you XP with it, you'd for sure have to call to order it that way. XP is 5 years old, Vista is going to be here to stay whether you care for it or not. UAC can be turned off. And as I said above it is far better with multimedia stuff than XP is.

As for needing more RAM or something for 'digital photography', I disagree there too. About the most advanced thing normal people are going to do is create HDR images, those can be done just as easily on a 5 year old system as they can a brand new one. If he planned on getting a computer to do something more crazy with photoshop or whatever he'd probably already know what the hardware should be like to do that in the most efficient manner possible.

That is more than enough Ram and HD space to run the spyware/ uh I mean Vista, goodluck with the spyware wooops sorry I mean Vista install. And if you are buying from dell and thats all you are doing you should ask them for Kubuntu, free Word processor compatable to MSoffice, Kubuntu is laid out like Windows Xp andshould make you feel right at home.

"3 gigs prevents you from running in dual channel mode which sacrifices speed."

    Incorrect
    I am running 3GB PC5300 @ 667mhz in dual-channel mode.
    4 slots total
    2 x 1GB
    2 X 512mb
    2 pairs of matched sticks

Alright you got me. You can run it like that. But if you run 3 1 gig sticks you can't run it in dual channel. It was an oversight on my part.
