Is OS in the RAM or HDD?

  1. Hey guys, just a quick question.
Is the OS stored in the RAM or in the Hard Drive. I forgot from my comp class and I have a really slow RAM stick in right now and I want to replace it but I don't want to lose my OS.

the OS is on the HDD, it is temporarily (or a portion of it) is loaded into ram while the computer is on. Ram is Temporary memory. when you power off or restart everything in ram is gone. so you can replace ram modules whenever you wish with no data loss.

Hdd, but I suspect if you don't know that, then you may also have trouble finding proper RAM.

I actually have found the right RAM, but I already have a boxed version of Windows Vista and I wanted to make sure I could install it and not worry about taking it out.
