Keep getting ntvdm.exe error?

Every now and then when I install programs and when I try to open programs windows reports an error with ntvdm.exe but I have no idea on what to do about it. It's also stopping me from accessing my new Sony Vegas 7! What can I do to make this error disappear, and why am I receiving this error anyway?

My computer is newly hand built and I have been getting this error with some applications ever since I booted it up. Anyone know how to get rid of it?

NTVDM.EXE is a compatibility module for using older software.

What version of Windows are you using?

I am using Windows XP Pro SP2. Actually after making some changes and reinstalling my motherboard drivers my problem seems to be gone, I can access Vegas again! Thanks anyway
