In a press release yesterday LaCie announced the release of its Wireless Space line of Wi-Fi storage solutions. Connecting to your existing Wi-Fi network, the external drive aims to provide centralized storage for backups and media files. It is both PC and Mac compatible and has support for UPnP/DNLA and iTunes, allowing steaming of both video and music files.

An added bonus is the option to use the drive as a wireless b, g, or n access point, boosting the range of your current network. The Wireless Space can even be set up to serve as a full-featured router, thereby filling the role of a complete all-in-one device for your home networking needs. Even better, the design of the drive is "engineered for natural heat dissipation and near-silent operation," an important factor for always-on devices.

The press release states that the drive is currently available only in Europe with a US release expected in October. Pricing is set at $229.99 (1TB) and $349.99 (2TB), respectively.

I just pre-ordered one by calling LaCie, never heard of the company prior to this post, anyone have experience with them?

They've been around for a while. I have an old LaCie firewire external HD that's run like a champ for ages. Like this drive it's got a nice metal case that feels solid still despite a ton of use, so I'd feel good buying another product from them. Hope it works well for you!

I have a usb LaCie drive I've had for a while. You have to wait to turn off the drive manually after turning off the computer as it isn't automatic like the present usb drives. It gives off a lot of heat, and the price was a little on the high end. Makes a lot of noise too as it is a metal case.
