LAN connection-cable unplugged

i've been given a PC running windows XP.
i've connected it all up and its telling me the network cable is unplugged, when i test the ethernet adapter it says it's working.
I'm running a wireless connection to a laptop so know the modem is working.
I don't know what else to try.

Get into the Control Panel, "System", "Device Manager" and look for any yellow exclamation marks. Tell us what you find. If you see any yellow marks, right-click on that line and uninstall the device, then restart the PC. If a suitable driver is not found and installed, the network device might be bad especially if the network device is part of the motherboard. You can always install a USB or PCI network adapter
