Laptop crashing out, could this be the graphic card or processor?

    Good evening all,

my friend has an old Advent 7110 laptop and is experiencing a couple of problems with it, mainly this one, described in his own words: "lappy keeps crashing but not in a turny-offy way, the screen goes all liney and freezes then when you turn it off and on again the fan runs but it doesn't boot" - it does this while plugged in or not.

He originally asked me about graphics cards, thinking it might be something to do with that, but it sounds more like a processor or power issue to me, has anyone got any ideas??

    Thank you,
    Jess

Sounds like a damaged video cable from the LCD to the motherboard...

ok, thanks for that, is that something i could replace or would it be soldered to the m.board?
    Thanks again,
    Jess

The video cable is replaceable, but it is not easy to do. The cable may be pinched where it passes close to one of the LCD's hinges... This could be an inverter or LCD fault too
