Laptop screen dims but display works on external source

Hi All,

All of a sudden my Asus M51vr laptop's screen dimmed where I can see an outline of the programs running and the cursor moving. The laptop is functioning fine and when I plug an external source to output the display via the HDMI cable it displays it without any issues. I reinstalled my graphics driver and still no joy.

It's frusturating to see an putline of objects on the screen behnd the dimness but way too dark to be able to view it.

Does anyone know what the cause of this might be?

The backlight in the laptop screen is bad, or the cable coming from the motherboard to the LCD panel is damaged...
