Laptop thinks its plugged into router via ethernet

My wireless connection is just fine. I am using other devices wirelessly with success. My laptop is conected ot the wireless internet just fine and then randomly it stops. The icon in the lower right corner changes from the wireless symbol to the plugged-in ethernet symbol but it isn't plugged in. It is as if the laptop thinks it is plugged via an ethernet cable when it isn't

This could be caused by a momentary loss of the wireless signal. This causes the laptop to try connecting using the wired network connection

Interesting. on my laptop, if I disconnect the wired connection and disable wifi, I still see the wifi icon, but there's no connections available.
