Leaked Office 15 screenshots and details emerge

It's been roughly two months since Microsoft Office 2010 made its debut in stores but it seems work on its successor is already underway. Not much is known about the next Office productivity suite, naturally, since it's still in a very early development stage. However, Russian website Wzor is offering 'proof' that the software does exists by posting what appears to be pre-alpha builds of Office 15 available internally in Redmond.

Wzor claims the next major iteration of Microsoft's productivity suite is slated for release in 2014, presumably months after launching Windows 8, so new features and direction of development probably won't be clear for a while. However, in the current build, there's a new element of application development named "Microsoft Limestone Application Integration" or simply "Microsoft Lime." According to Softpedia, the software giant also appears to have integrated a KMS activator into Office 15, making it easier for companies using volume licenses to activate their installations quickly.

Looks exactly like a Windows 7 taskbar, with some gadgets running in it, like the battery meter (or what I'm assuming is).

I've not even bothered with Office 2010 yet. I can't part myself from my Office 2007 Ultimate edition. lol.

Why are you guys talking about the taskbar, when the topic is about Office. And clearly, it looks EXACTLY the same as Office 2010....

I honestly don't know how much more they can do to the Office Products, especially Word and Excel. They already don't lack for a single feature. I can't remember the last time I heard someone say, "Gee, I wish I could do 'x' in Word or Excel." It's been years...

I totally agree; its that reason alone thats prevented me from actually upgrading to Office 2010. I'm sure there are plenty of changes, but (like you by the sounds of it) I only really use Outlook, Word and Excel, and they work fine already.

Changing the subject slightly... Does Office 2010 have new extensions like office's .docx extensions?

it just looks too tiny for the taskbar..the start button is poking out like vista

I'm really stumped here. I thought that the Russians were solely involved with internet porn and malware. Isn't this story way out of their comfort zone?

No new features in Office 2010?

How about finally delivering a native 64-bit version of the entire suit? This one alone makes sense for some people to upgrade, if you have to deal with huge documents. How about allowing MS-Access 2010 to have native support for SQL Server 2008?

In the next one I'd expect tight integration with all HTML5 features, first of all, like auto-publishing documents into HTML5. And further tightening security is always good. How about GPU acceleration for rendering documents and presentations like they did for IE9? What about integration with the latter? I could continue.... You may say I don't need it, but the industry does require it, to keep the pace

Why did M$ have to do this to me??? on what grounds they changed so much?? i'm still using Off 2003, and everytime I try to switch to 2007+ I end up in frustration, it took me the other day an enormous amount of time to find the word count in these new versions! I hope this new russian version will put everything backk to normal.

But truthfully, I think Office reached its prime already. And the Guest that said they could implement HTML5 features; those type of additions could simply be added in a windows update, or a service pack. And there's no need to use GPU accel., it would improve nothing at all. Don't try to force the issue, Office has reached its peak with Office 2010. It is already the BEST suite. From the design to functionality, there's really nothing else you can do to improve it. BUT, of course, MS will keep releasing Office until the end of time, because other than Windows, it is its best source of income.

I wasn't trying to enforce anything in my post above, but the truth is, there's no limit to perfection. Plus, security-wise it is an ongoing work by definition, there's no ending to it, it has to continue, and one just can't keep patching the existing product all the time. The same analogy applies to MS making Windows 8 - I looked at the first leaked screenshots, and it does look better, and I believe that it will be faster, for one thing, and no doubt it will be more secure, and as for the rest - time will show.

I'm still hoping they get a good text-to-speech platform working better than the previous disaster ones for the new Office. Voice commands and dictating letters is still on their to-do list. We can already see this working quite well on Android. It is a shame that Office still doesn't have a decent support for speech.

As I said, all of that can be implemented through a windows update or service pack, simply because those feature are not necessary for the proper use of the software. They are all bells and whistles.

I still use Office 2007 and I have the Office 2010 install here. I upgraded and don't like the new layouts etc...

I felt they improved a lot from 2003 to 2007 but 2010 just doesn't seem right to me?
