Google is widely expected to announce the follow up to its Nexus 4 smartphone sometime later this month. But there likely won’t be any surprises left by then. Following a handful of leaks, including an FCC filing and a brief cameo in KitKat’s promotional video, now a 281-page draft of a service manual for the device is doing the rounds online with details of its internals as well as a few shots of the exterior.
According to the document, the new handset will be about the same size as the Nexus 4 but it manages to add a quarter of an inch to the screen (4.95) while increasing resolution to 1920 x 1080. There’s also a 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor paired with 2GB of RAM, LTE with support multiple bands used across the globe, NFC, wireless charging, an 8-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization plus a 1.3-megapixel unit on the front for video calls, Bluetooth 4.0, and a slightly larger 2,300mAh battery.
Manufactured by LG, the so-called Nexus 5 is essentially a mildly revamped version of the company’s G2, equipped with a lower megapixel camera, a slightly smaller screen and smaller battery.
The document doesn’t mention what version of Android the new handset will run but Android 4.4 KitKat, which was announced in early September, is a likely candidate. In terms of internal storage both 16GB and 32GB variants are mentioned, and similar to the Nexus 4 there's no microSD for expansion.
We won’t have word on pricing and availability until Google announces the new Nexus later this month. Hopefully, despite the high end hardware, they’ll stick to their affordable out-of-contract strategy.
