LG Electronics has unveiled the LG Optimus Black, the world's slimmest phone at 9.2mm and with the thinnest smartphone profile of 6.0mm. The LG Optimus Black will be rolled out globally in the first half of 2011. The phone will initially be released with Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo) and will be upgradeable to Android 2.3 (codenamed Gingerbread).

The upgrade will allow users to utilize higher quality video telephony functions with the 2MP front-facing camera. The LG Optimus Black weighs only 109g, features a 1500 mAh battery, supports Wi-Fi Direct, and has software features for faster access to important apps and content: Optimus UI 2.0 lets users directly view messages, e-mails, and missed calls from the locked screen with just one finger tap while the Gesture UI offers lifting, shaking, and tapping, for taking calls, entering camera mode, or playing music.

The phone also features a dramatically brighter 4-inch NOVA display, designed to be the brightest, clearest, and most readable among mobile screens with 700 nits of brightness for optimal visibility. The NOVA technology also enables users to maintain visibility whether indoors or outdoors under strong sunlight, as it has higher levels of brightness and pure white tones that deliver true black and white colors. The NOVA display also radically reduces power consumption by 50 percent during general indoor use compared to a conventional LCD; meanwhile, AMOLED consumes twice as much power as NOVA to display a full white screen (think browsing).

"We are excited to introduce this stylish new Android smartphone and expect the LG Optimus Black to play a key role in the mobile market," Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said in a statement. "LG Optimus Black reflects our core strengths of advanced technology, in both display and design, offering the world's brightest screen and the world's slimmest design in an attractive and smart package."

I gotta say, I'm impressed with how the Android phones are progressing. I have a year and a half on my AT&T iPhone 4 contract, with the way that Android phones are getting better all the time I may very well be looking at an Android phone on Verizon with LTE.

Wow, there's already a technology superior to AMOLED? I got to admit, this device looks very impressive.

Any word about the carrier(s)?

I'm actually dissapointed. Everyone knows that LG is more than capable of a 1280x720 screen, but they continue to use 800x480. Give me a break. I do admit the screen sounds impressive but with LG making the 960x640 panels in the Iphone 4 it only makes sense to match or top that as well.

This press release is pretty scant on other specifications such as processor type/speed, on board memory, etc. As for carriers in the US it'll likely include Sprint and Verizon, so if you have either you're probably fine.

I've been holding off on getting a new phone (I've had my current old fashion flip screen phone for two years) but this thing looks very nice (and small, which is a plus). I just hope being the slimmest does not mean the easiest to snap in half. =p

Wait, but I didn't read the resolution was going to be 800 x 480. How do you know it's also the same for this device?

According to them the black sports 800x480.

@Princeton: your disappointment is the same as my disappointment that Laptop makers continually cling to 1280/1366 x 720x768 resolutions for 15.4" and lower. PLEASE... displays are more capable than that.

Aww, now Apple is going to have to pull their ads claiming to be the "world's thinnest smartphone". Oh well, they had a good run :)

I forgot to mention that as well in my comment :p. I was kinda hoping someone would take away the highest res and thin titles though.
