Logging Off

When i try to turn off my computer by the usual way, it does not shut down any of the programmes i have running for security. The only way i can shut it down is to log off , switch user and close down that way , with no problem......does anybody know what the problem is.

I am running xp home edition

sounds (maybe) you used one userid (which has admin rights) to install startup security programs?
and maybe the userid you try to shutdown with doesn't have admin rights? thus you must logoff , then logon as a user w/admin rights in order to shutdown?
