Normally, Applications->Utilities->Directory Access will allow a Mac to specify a workgroup name.
Just discovered working on a friend's mini (10.7.9 as I recall) that Directory Access is missing!

    Also missing is /etc/smb.conf

SO - - the mini is not able to participate in File Sharing.

    Anyone with better info? TIA.

Update: Apparently, OSx 10.7 has moved the control into the Network & WORKGROUP is set under Network->WINS tab

    see this

I was going to reply last night because I knew I have seen the workgroup somewhere in 10.7. But I didn't have my laptop booted up, I do now, but I see you've already figured it out. Carry on :)
