Mandatory Windows 8.1 Update failing for many

Windows 8.1 and update 1 Installed without any problems. Did have to do work around on sign in screen. I am staying with Start 8 software for start button.

I didn't have a problem with the installation. And I like the new desktop options/context. But as a person who said Windows 8 is ok for power users, I keep finding reasons that it is worse off than I thought.
But only a few reasons in the past week (when I got my new laptop) would be: unable to use tiles (fixed that), unable to connect to the internet ("fixed" that), unable to get the tiles to connect to xbox live (fixed that), and startup programs not starting up at initial login (workaround for that). I mention those things specifically because as a power user, I can (for the most part) figure those out. But as a normal user? Ha, good luck with that...

At lease it's downloading quick off TS for me. 12 secs to go after 1 minute of starting it. Not bad and my internet is very quick at 4 am. lol

I have a Gateway desktop PC and a Lenovo ThinkPad Twist. Both have Windows 8.1. When I try to do the Windows 8.1 update, BOTH fail with error 80070003. I have tried repeatedly using various MSConfig settings, disabling anti-malware software, and installing the update manually resulting in the same error message on both machines. I have a trouble ticket with Microsoft Support which was filed 4/8/2014. The technician spent 6 hours on 4/9/2014 trying to fix the problem remotely on the Lenovo but failed to fix the problem and had to escalate it again. He will resume trying to fix it on Monday, 4/14/2014.

Yep.. Right at 93% windows update got stuck and aborted .. Spend the next couple of hours with support .. got no fix.. Got called but I declined for a remote session.. Instead did a system restore, finished the other updates and then did the major update which went thru ..

Likewise... I tried manually and within Windows Update but I was being stuck at 75%.

I did a clean installation of Windows 8.1 RTM and found 44 updates (update 1 included ). Fortunately all went fine after that.

It's indeed, a messy update.

Similar to the problem in the article, the installation process quickly reached 86 percent in my case, then slowed to a crawl . At that point, the installation jumped to 99%. A further message simply said the updates couldn’t be completed and that Windows was undoing changes.

The "workaround" and "fixes" didn't work. Cannot update.

It worked on my 8 year old Dell Dimension e521 that came with XP.
Runs perfectly smoothly. I like the changes.

And just think of it peeps, Microsoft wants to do this to you on a yearly basis. The future looks bright for you guinea pigs fine young intelligent people. LOL. Let me know when Windows 9 is released. Then I'll let you know if I care.

We are all beta testers for Microsoft that was there plan well that's what one of the regional VP told me here in on meeting back in 1998. So still on going today. Windows 9 and Windows 10 and beyond just have to see how well Microsoft UAT resolves the reports from the front-line end user at home and at the office reports of issues.

For me my desktop system #3 got the update of 5 (1 dual / 4 quad desktops) . I still have Windows 7 - 64 bit on two more laptops and 32 bit on two netbooks running as always.

Installed No. 1 hanged up. Closed it started it again.
Installed No. 2 okay!

Who knows what happen to Install No. 1 but the second time around it worked! Chrome Metro App for Windows 8.1 working again was crashing prior to this install now no more!

Now on to the Windows 8.1 Tablet and see how that goes with this update.

Just love it how the first 10 guests had no problems :) All posted on the same hour, with same phrase and probably from the same IP :)

I had no problems with updating my PC. It only took about 15 min to download and install the update.

Despite the problems and attempt to make it more suitable as a desktop system the interface is plane ugly and unacceptable to me. Win 7 however it great and flexible, change it to suit your taste. I for one have no plans ever to upgrade to 8, MS is crazy.

If half of the Windows population hadn't dropped their pants and foamed at the mouth to get Windows 8 installed on their systems from day 1 even though some of them didn't like the interface we would probably be getting even more out of Microsoft than we are right now. Every concession they are making in these updates is because of a vocal public who has made it more than clear that the first incarnation(monster) was unacceptable. I would hate to install Windows 8 at this point in the battle because of a couple of dog bones they have thrown me and give them the "false" impression that everything is acceptable now. It's not.

It's taken me four days but I finally got it installed tonight with the help of the comments from many people on MS support threads. Another comment which was very common was that updates should never be this difficult, especially ones which are mandatory and on which future security and other updates depend.

So just as challenging as Linux?

It went smooth, easy and quick for me. It's a good update, I even feel my pc a little faster. I hope the others that are having issues get them resolve soon...
