Maxtor HDD Trouble

I have a 200gb external usb maxtor HDD and until today it has worked perfectly. I tried to access it this morning and I get a message saying "drive is not formatted, do you want to format now?"

I have got all my college work on there and it has to be handed in this friday.

Please can someone tell how to get my stuff back.

Take that HD out of the case and put it as slave inside a PC.
You should be able to read it then.
