Mic not working

My microphone won't pick up, when I go to the master volume properties the recording option is greyed out. No programs will pick up the mic. I am sure that the mic is working and is plugged into the correct input. Any idea why it won't work?

Go through the advanced settings in Control Panel-->Audio
And you will eventually find an area where you need to tick the Mic on
