Microsoft announces Silverlight 5 with hardware acceleration

  1. Microsoft has announced the next version of Silverlight, its competitor to Adobe Flash. A beta of Silverlight 5 will be release in Q2 2011 and the final version will launch in the second half of next year.

    The improvement look great, I always considered Silverlight the possible Flash replacement...

    But didn't Microsoft announce, somewhere I'm not sure if it was here, that it would stop focusing so much on Silverlight, and instead focus on HTML5 (mainly due to IE9)? Does that statement immediately imply that this Silverlight 5 release will be the last? Or at least will it be the release where the development of the platform will start to slow down?

    Without the presence of Silverlight, Adobe wouldn't have much incentive to fix all the security vulnerabilities of Flash quickly.
