Microsoft has revealed it will release a 'Release Preview' version of Windows 8 in the first week of June. Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft's Windows unit made the announcement at a Windows Developer Days event in Japan, and it was promptly confirmed by the company's Building Windows 8 Twitter feed.

The upcoming release will follow the Windows 8 Consumer Preview available to users as a "beta" since February 29, and take us one step closer to the final version of the OS. Microsoft hasn't narrowed down a date for the latter but it is widely expected to land in October, three years after Windows 7 was released.

The company didn't detail exactly what will change and what will be included in the Release Preview, although if previous releases are anything to go by, this is what would normally be called a 'Release Candidate' and should be very close to the finalized code of Windows 8. From here, Microsoft will likely work on any remaining bugs before hitting RTM and seeding that to TechNet and MSDN subscribers ahead of a public release.

Last week, Microsoft announced that its latest operating system will come in three consumer flavors: Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT (stands for runtime). The first two will be available at retail, while the third will only be preinstalled on ARM-based devices. This has been reduced from four retail editions of Windows Vista and three for Windows 7. The features included in each version are detailed here. Outside these, there will be an Enterprise edition that contains everything in Windows 8 Pro with added features for IT organization.

Wonder if you can upgrade to it from the CP? Were you able to update the DP to the CP? I've got quite a few hours on my 8 CP install and it would be a shame to have to clean install this, upgrade would be much nicer.

...DP...CP......*childish snicker

I agree though it would be great to have an upgrade option from CP to RP. I must admit that Metro has grown on me as well.

DP > CP upgrade was not officially supported.
I would not recommend it personally, if you really want to test it properly.
Since it risks to carry over bugs from CP > RP
These kinds of bugs occurring during such an upgrade would not be relevant for the RC testing stage...

horrid product, can't wait till it dies a flaming death and they realize how insipid they have made it.

I just now started using windows 7 on my machine....
Hmmmm I will wait a few years..
I have Dual booter, Win XP Pro 64, and Wnd 7 Ultimate On the Machine...
I will Wait..
When there SP comes out..
For Win 8...
Maybe I will Skip Win 8..

Metro interface was designed to be a failure right from the start, so bring it on another Vista soon to be thrown away, no wonder why Vista support has ceased way before Windows XP since it was trash, I guess history will repeat itself this time too. lol

Why don't they just call Windows 8 "Windows ME 2" and be done with it. What "Start"ed out as the next great Microsoft renaissance will turn out to be a devastating failure based on a few simple blunders.

Metro UI hasn't won me over yet. I can see where it would look great on a tablet, maybe that's the future, but I'm looking at a desktop experience that makes Metro difficult to appreciate.

Touch Keyboards like Logitech's K400 might make the experience a bit better. Only time will tell.

I didn't try this, because I clean installed 8 CP. But, there was an option in 8 CP to keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps. The other options were 'just files' and 'nothing'. I suppose if the CP to RP allows to keep files that would be ok, but it would be great if I could keep the apps too.

I upgraded from the developer preview to the consumer preview, so my guess is the June release should also be upgradable.
