Hello

We have a Buffalo WBMR-G54 Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router connected via Ethernet cable to our main pc. We also have a Gateway laptop which we can use on the wireless network created by the Buffalo Router and we use the internet through the Buffalo Router through the network cable. This has worked fine for weeks now, but this morning the main pc will not connect to the internet. The router is still working ok as the laptop connects through the wireless connection. I have hooked up the laptopt through the network cable and accessed the admin page of the router, so the cable is working fine. I can see the network card on the pc using ipconfig. I have tried repairing the connection and have uninstalled and re-installed the network card in the pc and have also tried several network cables but to no avail. I cannot ping from the main pc to the router. I think thats all i have tried. Anyone any ideas why it suddenly has stopped accessing the internet.

Thanks in advance

Stuart

The problem could be firewall, hardware or viral in nature. The first thing I'd do because it's easy would be to restart all the devices involved. So unplug the router and modem from the wall wait thirty seconds and plug the modem back into the wall. Let the modem fully boot and then plug the router back into the wall and let it fully boot and then boot your computer. Check to see if you have internet access.

If that didn't work then I'd try removing the router from the equation. Connect your PC directly to the modem with the ethernet cable. If that didn't work then at least we pretty much know that your computer is the source of the problem, but you did fairly well in establishing that with your first post.

Cheers but I have since tried all that. I have even reset the router passwords etc by connecting the laptop to it through the ethernet connections. I can ping the router from the laptop through the ethernet connection but cant from the main pc, even though the network card light is on green. Beginning to think Network card maybe goosed.

Your firewall could be blocking all internet access, or you may have a false proxy setup in Internet Options under the Connections tab, but the easy answer is, like you said, your NIC is broken. If it's built on the motherboard you will need to disable it in your motherboard's BIOS and uninstall the driver software before you install a new card. If it's an add-in you will still need to uninstall its driver software and take out the old card before you install the new card.

Before you spend any money on a new Network Interconnect Card, I'd at least download HijackThis. Rename HiJackThis to Crusty and then place the exe into a folder named HJT and then place that into your Program Files folder. Run HijackThis and attach the log file to a post in this thread. Then we can take a look at it and see if there is anything naughty runing on your computer that might block internet access.

Thanks, OK i will do the log. Reason I think it is the NIC is that when I connect the laptop to the router using an ethernet cable, I can open a cmd window and ping the router no problem. When I try the same on the main pc i get a timed out error for the ping. Its as though the NIC is working ok apart from communicating to other devices. Does this seem feasible
