I wonder how many years it will take for people to understand that the memory is there to be used. Otherwise, what's the point in having more than 600 MB of RAM?

Posted from a 12 GB RAM machine with ~50 MB free :)

I know it's for use, it's just these days now, computers are just using more and more RAM! Plus I would glady disable Pageing file for both my Tower and laptop if I had atleast 4GB installed for both of them, then I could use RAM directly without the HDD interfering with my programs...

But I do wonder what the RAM cap set is for XP and VISTA, anyone know?

11950MB used already?? DAMN!........ You on a server computer I'm guessing? What are you doing to your machine???

    Memory Limits for Windows Releases

This is my desktop, it's file cache (like Didou said). Apps & games load faster as most of them are in RAM already.

Dead on. It certainly is a very odd phenomenon. Tell someone their L2 cache is siting half empty and they will be upset that it isn't be utilized more, but tell someone that their main RAM is half full and they will upset that the system is using too much.

Granted that i prefer to have as few processes running as is feasible, but if windows wants to prefetch all my common apps I am all for it.

After few weeks of regular use (with only those applications installed i use e.g. office/firefox/email client/messenger etc.) ....... my system at uses about 20.89% or total available memory; with AVG/Commodo running in the background along with nVidia drivers & motherboard drivers, fraps etc.

My same system is configured to dual boot into xp and with same softwares its consuming about 21.98% of total ram ....... so i guess the difference is really nothing much, and only the installed software will actually determine whatever physical ram you left with for use, after booting.

Now, I've used XP for ages but its now on its death throes ..... and there where it should be; because you can't keep plugging its holes for infinity ..... I felt that I had to move on. But then again; its personal choice i guess.

Don't move on! XP still has the world under it's favor! You don't know what awaits for you beyond XP. But I know what's beyond that, t ain't a pretty site, that I can tell you! Now I want to go back to XP! I was a fool to let go of it, and now I've come crawling back!

Can I do that on VISTA and XP as well?

I really want to disable Paging file because I know that slow your computer down.

I can't put paging file on another HDD because I don't have one!

I've beta tested vista as well as for 7 for well over a year each...... and unlike most of the other people i never had any and i mean ANY problems with either of them at any stage. Except with vista which felt bit sluggish i.e. pre SP1. Beside, I always up for change and something new; not the one who'll hang on to something for just the sake of it. I've even tried few linux distros during this period but always came back to windows, because i don't have enough time to waste on them.

So have I, but only on VISTA though, VISTA is like the devil's child, that's haunts me till this day even has I am typing this here! Right now I only Sp1, Do you know where I can get SP2? I've heard it before but I don't know if it's real or not. I also heard that it will fix most of the common problems you are facing in SP1. Should I go with the flow and hope that this isn't another false accusation? Like my friend you goated me into getting VISTA he said it was all good, better than XP! ha, some taste for VISTA he's got!

Yes SP2 for vista is available for long time now; I have used Vista HP with SP2 once it came out; again no problem at all, except that what felt earlier about Vista i.e. the SuperFetch has been implemented in it; any way here is the url for Vista SP2:

    thanks.....

Is SP2 going to be the final SP there is to VISTA? it said it on the site.... Is there going to be SP3? no? ha!
I this download runned automatically? like the download file is a temporary file? Well, this is going to take some time to download

I have no idea ..... there may be an SP3 but not anytime soon; as far as I know MS is currently preparing SP1 for Win7 (what it will do or contain along with various fixes, i have no idea either).

Anyway download it and install it; it will take a while to do so and you can either keep the file or delete it once you are done with it

Thanks LNCPapa - Win 7 shows the difference between the "available" and "free" that lets you feel better about your memory use but still shows that it is doing a much better job of using your memory as cache.

I hope you are using a good download manager like net transport etc.
  19. GN48 Newcomer, in training Posts: 156

    uh.......

Uh...... I'm using Firefox to download this, I have Free Download Manager 3 but I don't how to get it to work with firefox. hmmmm wonder if it's better than Firefox's download manager. It only sometimes work in IE8.

    Interesting.....

2.98 GB of memory used! Damn! Mines like half of that on VISTA and a slightly less than a quarter on XP.

hmmmm...... so that's what the windows task manager looks like in Windows 7. Looks pretty different to XP and VISTA. I'm guessing you have a proceesor with 8 cores working at 100% capcacity! Am I right? or is it just working at 20% capacity?

Hmmmm.... seeing how you brought this up, I do have a simple question; Is kernel Memory Paging file? or do you have paging file disabled and just using your RAM?
