    Okay, it's done

Hi Archean, I've successfully downloaded SP2 for VISTA 32-bit. After installing and spending 30 minutes on this, it says Service Pack was not installed. Reverting changes. What does this mean? This also happens when I try to use Windows Update to install the latest patches for VISTA. Except instead of 'Service Pack was not installed' it says updates was not installed. Then once it finally boots to windows, it shows that Service Pack was not installed and there was no specific error but a technical one.

    Here's what it looks like:

After that, Spybot tells me that a registry entry has been deleted: AVG toolbar update thingy and then this showed up after:

I pressed Deny change, but it just keeps coming back, so out maddness, I finally clicked Allow change

Anyway, I clicked on the link that says: Go online to learn more about this issue
And they said something about downloading this System Update readiness Tool. So i did. Now I'm just waiting to see what th outcome is now again when I install SP2

I am looking into it .... Please tell me one thing: have you disabled system restore by any chance? or altered your system registry before ?

    Huh?

I don't think I've disabled system restore, but i think I remember one time I did, but I don't know if i actually did it or not.

System Registry? what in the regedit thingy? yes? then the only things I did with the registry was make it display a login message at start before the accounts shows, Faster Menus to reduce the time for VISTA's and third-party menus to open and there was one other I can't seem to remember, but I think it makes VISTA use the Kernel memory to boot from.

Those are the only registry edits, and the deletes are one for games and programs I know I don't have anymore on my Laptop.

If you have tinkered with registry manually and or disabled system restore Vista SP2 doesn't like it; and if you don't know a restore point of time when you didn't do anything to registry go back to it and try again. If that is not possible, then i am unsure what to do; i will dig bit more to see if i can help, but be mentally prepared you may end up having to reinstall vista then.

Or the best thing could be just dont bother with vista and jump ship for win 7 ;)

I've like uh, delete all the old restore point to save disc space unfortunately!

    I can't reinstall VISTA, because I don't have the installation disc! :D

    It was preinstalled!

I don't think they sell Windows VISTA genuine anymore!

I'll have to get a copie versiong of somewhere! This is also the same with XP, 2000 and 98SE!

I can't go up to Windows 7, after I've experienced what VISTA is like, and not sure if 7 is like VISTA! Plus unless if I can reinstall windows, I don't really think I'd want to throw away my VISTA laptop, it's a genuine copy and throwing that out is like throwing your kids out! :haha:

Do you think if there's a way to enable system restore in the registry?

    by any chance? Could work!

If you have vista setup cd, you can try to repair your vista installation, tell me if it works for you; also check out this discussion about problems installing SP2
