I upgraded video card from a 5850 to a 6970. I get nothing but blue screen indicating a hardware problem. I tried to "fix" the problem numerous times but could not. I put the 5850 back in and everything is running smoothly.

FYI, I did make sure the correct driver was installed for each card.

I'm not sure why the 6970 would be causing my machine to blue screen.

I have a Gigabyte P55A UD3 board and an 850W Corsair modular PSU.

My recommendation would be to completely uninstall the previous ATI software, including CCC, run DriverSweeper and then download and install the latest full package/suite. I would also make sure to update DX11 even though you are coming from another capable GPU. If you are still having problems, contact the graphics manufacturer and follow their troubleshooting tips or set up an RMA. Make sure to tell them that the 5850 is working fine...

Good luck :)

Assuming your hardware isn't damaged (including overheating), 99.9% of the time a blue screen crash is a driver issue.

By any chance are you using v10.12 of Catalyst? It doesn't work with the 6900 series.
