Move HDD from Sony Viao desktop to AMD can it be done?

    My friends Sony Viao's screen failed. She would like to move hdd to a computer with AMD can it be done? I am getting as far as the system repair screen windows 7 home premium. Says windows cannot repair. I am assuming it has to do with all new hardware.
    She has 2 months worth of docs not backed up so I would rather not reformat if at all possible. Or is there any way to backup the drive first?

    You have the choice of either try booting from a recovery CD (like Knoppix) or removing the drive and connecting it to a different computer to try copy/recovering the files
