moving icons

hi all
i have a laptop with windows xp home edition
and i would like to group some icons in the top left hand corner and some in the top right hand corner and the same for the bottom, but everytime i hold the left click down and drag them to place that i want them they shoot back again to where they came from
anyideas what to do many thanks

Right click your desktop and select Arrange Icons By. Untick the Auto Arrange entry. You should now be able to place the icons where you like.
