MS vs Apple security programs

A friend was trying to decide between buying an ipad or a W10 computer & I told him the ipad needed no security programs like an anti virus anti malware but windows does. Why? Is the question

Let's be clear: "Mac" is a term used for desktop systems running OS X. That's not the same as mobile devices running IOS 10.x, 11.x and now 12.x

One 'economic' reason that historically Macs have been immune is the market size of these systems wasn't big enough to make the effort to infect them "pay off". Now with the iPad and iPhone becoming ubiquitous, that has changed significantly.

As some will recall I preach using a proactive A/V like Avast Free and have it running on the wife's macOS High Sierra 10.13. Our iPads and iPhones are running naked to the wind without and A/V, but Avast does support those devices.
