Welcome to TechSpot! I keep thinking everyday I'll hear about this being another False Positive due to a bad update from AVG. That hasn't happened so far.

I see you have Combofix on the system. When did you run it? Did you know that AVG has to be uninstalled to run it?
==================================
The Java is outdated. That means you will have some malware in the Java cache. Let's start with Java:
Update Java now: Java Updates Note: Uncheck 'Install Yahoo Toolbar' on the download screen before you do the update.

Uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 20 & Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 and any earlier versions in Add/Remove Programs as they are vulnerabilities for the system.
-----------------------------
To clear the Java Plug-in cache:

  • [1]. Click Start > Control Panel.
[2]. Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
    java.png
    The Java Control Panel appears.
    plugin_cache1.jpg

[3].Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files. The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
    plugin_cache2.jpg

[4] Click Delete Files. The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
    plugin_cache3.jpg

[5]. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
[6]. Click Apply> OK on Temporary Files Settings window.

Reboot the computer

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESETOnlineScan
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
[o] Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    [o] Double click on the
    esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png
    on your desktop.
  • Check 'Yes I accept terms of use.'
  • Click Start button
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    esetonlinescannersettings_thumb.jpg
  • Uncheck 'Remove found threats'
  • Check 'Scan archives/
  • Leave remaining settings as is.
  • Press the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please wait for the scan to finish.
  • When the scan completes, press List of found threats
  • Push Export of text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Paste this log in your next reply.
  • Push the Back button
  • Push Finish

NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.
After I see that log I'll know what best to do next.
==============================================
My Guidelines: please read and follow:
  • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time and I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
  • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me.

  • Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
  • Observe these:

[o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
[o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.
  • Please let me know if there is any change in the system.
If I have not replied for 2 days, you can send me a PM reminder. Include the URL of your thread. Please do not send me a PM to tell me your logs are up.
If I don't get a reply from you in 5 days, the thread will be closed. If your problem persist, you can send a PM to reopen it.

Thanks I will try these fixes and see if anything works, I forgot to mention that I have no internet access on that computer as Internet Explorer fails to start and Firefox comes up with a blank page and will not move from it.

I did know about AVG needing to be uninstalled before running ComboFix and did do so before running it. I only tried ComboFix after following the guide on Techspot and it said that it removed alot of files and problems but it still has not fixed the issue. So I will go and start with clearing the Java issue first and go from there. I will let you know how I get on.

I believe I am going to have to bite the bullet and reinstall.

The Java Virtual Machine in Control Panel reports that "Error: no 'client' JVM at: 'C:\Program Files... \jvm.dll" and when I try to uninstall Java it just says "Fatal Error during Installation."

So unfortunately it looks like there is no other fix and unless I hear back soon I will be reinstalling all my software, thanks anyway and if you have any other ideas please let me know.

Kerry

I only tried ComboFix after following the guide on Techspot and it said that it removed alot of files and problems but it still has not fixed the issue.

Do NOT run Combofix without our guidance: https://www.techspot.com/vb/topic138086.html
What 'guide' did you follow? Directions given to another user for their system?

A good example of why you shouldn't run Combofix on your own! A lot if files? What? Did it indicate a rootkit, because it is most likely you don't know how to interpret the log.

I forgot to mention that I have no internet access

A significant oversight! There are some things you can't do without internet access>> running an online virus scan for instance.

Firefox comes up with a blank page and will not move from it.

FF - prefs.js: browser.startup.homepage - hxxp://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome

I can reset this with script to run through Combofix.
Do you still have Combofix on the desktop?

"Error: no 'client' JVM at: 'C:\Program Files... \jvm.dll"

You're not looking for JVM. The install you see should be JRE> that's what you build the update on. If the Control Panel is in Classic View, the only word you should see is Java

Did you do the update first or did you uninstall Java first?
===============================================
Do you have a flash drive? One thing that can be noted in the Combofix log is a particular deletion that indicates an infected flash drive. Then it needs to be disinfected.

This is the big problem:
mWinlogon: UserInit=c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,,c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\application data\tkpeplgd\cqdixnje.exe

It will require identifying the file. If AVG indicated you had 1140 infected entries, the malware could be one of the file infectors such as Ramnit or Virut. But a hit or miss with someone else's directions isn't going to be the fix- no matter what it is!

If you want to have a go at this, I'll help you. But only on the condition that you relate the full extent of the problems.
No more "oh by the way...............!!

Is there anything else you have told me regarding the problems on the system?

Thanks for the reply and suggestions but I decided to go with a clean install of Windows 7 instead and leave XP behind. I had deduced that the tkpeplgd folder and its associates would be the most likely culprit as it was the only one that really looked out of place in the ComboFix log but I think a clean install was a better option in this case as it makes sure there are no further bugs or traces left behind.

Thanks again for all your help.
