The choice I like most is to buy an external enclosure, such as a Ampaqs, Blackstar, Element, Masscool, Nextar, Thermaltake, or Vantec (see Directron.com for example) then install your choice of 500 GB hard drive such as Western Digital Black, Western Digital Green, or Seagate. Format the drive from your desktop or laptop Windows.

Then everything you want to do will be possible and obvious. Store your external drive with cable where it will not be easily bumped or tipped over. These will connect via USB 2.0, some are USB 3.0, or Firewire depending upon what you order.

We have been doing this for most of our clients for years.

Note that many of the external inclosures are for SATA or IDE, but not both, while a few will allow install of either.

    Good luck

Seagate or Western Digital if you want a reliable one
