i was able to get the computer up and running again by using "chkdsk /r". after it restarted i ran a "spysweeper" scan and it showed nothing but after i shut it down last night and i restarted this morning it was ridiculously slow. did chkdsk again and it runs ok, although when running firefox tabs just open up by themselves. is there some way i can see what chkdsk is correcting? some sort of log that i can post?

Normally
Start-->Run-->eventvwr.msc
Click on "Application"
In the "Source" column, look for the "Winlogon" item.
Double-click it and you should see the results of your Chkdsk.

But to manually create a log file of a Check Disk scan
Start-->Run-->cmd
Type in the following:
CHKDSK C: /F > C:\CHKDISKLOG.TXT (note: substitute C for your drive letter)

Hit your Enter key.

Click YES on the popup to reboot.

After CHKDSK has run type this in Start | Run...

C:\CHKDISKLOG.TXT

Notepad will open to allow you to view the results of Check Disk scan

---------

Note: Spy Sweeper, is usually very high on system resource, I don't use it
I prefer free Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
