 Hoping somewhere here on this board can help me with my pc problem.
I bought used pc from that famous auction site... the hard-drive was bad when it arrived (Maxtor 80gb) so installed a used Western Digital 40gb instead.
Formatted and then loaded XP Pro on it...that worked fine.. but as I wanted some extra storage for all pictures and stuff, I installed a second hard-drive tonight ( Western Digital 80 gb, also used but was told in working condition.
I set the settings on the two drives as Master and Slave..with the operating system (40 gb as the master with XP loaded...and the 80gb as slave with the pin's.

I booted it up and a flag came up (Found new hardware) and after a short while another flag came up..(Your new hardware is ready to use)

Eureka !! I thought.....njaaa...not exactly right ........
When I go to "my computer" it doesn't show up

If I click on DISC C in the same screen and "propertys" the second hard drive (80) shows up ?

Why doesn't it show on 'My PC ?
and I was trying to defragment the whole pc...the second hard-drive doesn't show up either...and same with Norton...just drive C shows up ?
It's there, but no icon and not able to format or use it...
Im stumpfed.......

this pc..HP Pavilion A 288 N.

It boots up without any problem..takes some time but think that's OK, and no flicker or error messages...Just the second hard-drive doesn't seem to be around, but the property section it says it's enabled and working..

Any ideas ?
Am I out on deep waters or is this a easy fix for a newbie like me ?

Wow great shots
at desktop go to (right click )my computer
left click manage
high light disk management drive should be here to format

check on boot the bios see if it is in there
before you do that
at your last image highlight the 80gb drive click properties at bottom
this should then give you more info and maybe enable drive
if you can make it the 2nd ide channel as slave
that does not work config both the optical and the 80 to cable select
just caught the part about showing enabled in properties dah
back at my last image above click action and rescan drives
system may be booting faster than drive can start this means it's going bad

if you already have the drive on 2nd channel IDE put it on the 1st as slave
if still no go make it both drives cable slect here's where you have to watch out
master drive should be at the end of the cable

Thanks for the tip.
I took out the master and set up the salve as master instead to test.
Found out it's bad...:(
Guess never buy a used hard-drive...
Thanks for your help, will order a new one instead and try again.

:)So true..those auctions sites can be dangerous, but have good news, after the last attempt a brand new spanking hard drive got installed and running smooth.
Thanks again for the help
