No bootable device - F keys not working

Hi, newbee here, i have a Dell XPS M1330 lappy and i have an issue, when i boot up it comes up with No bootable device, i then tried using the F keys but they didn't seem to respond, i then took out the hard drive and connected it to a desktop pc, it recognised it via the usb then when i went into My Computer to locate it, it wasn't there, i checked the safley remove bit and it was there but wasn't assigned a drive like, D, or G etc.........can anyone assist please?

The hard drive probably failed and you will have to replace it
