would a pci video card automatically work if I install it in? i have been using my onboard vga and now it has completely die, so do I have to install the drivers before the new video card would work? This computer does have a pci-e slot too but im afraid it might not work as easily as a pci video card. I have already done the little checks but i kindof knew that the vga was going to go out sooner or later. My motherboard is a p5gd1-vm.

You have an issue here ..... unless cmos is configured to automatically detect a video adapter you might have problems installing the pci adapter, as you are gonna have to change cmos setting to make the new adapter your default, but you are unable to do this as you are not getting any display from the monitor.

I would try installing the pci card and see if i am able get a visual, then change the CMOS setting. This may or may not work.
