    a quick stupid question :D

In Excel how do I get cells to default to certain decimal places e.g. if I enter 1200 it enters 12.00, or 14300 enters 143.00. I should know this but can't do it...it's old age you see.

    TIA

Right click on the cell and choose "Format Cells" from the menu.

It should open up a new window with the tab called "Number" selected by default. In this tab, select "Number" and then put in "2" for decimal places.

Click OK and now everything you put in the cell will be formatted for decimals the way you would like.

The help section on Excel is one of its best features actually, and you can find quick solutions to a lot of questions like these as you use it by going to the help menu.

    thanks for the reply Rick.

But if I enter 1942 i want it to show 19.42 rather than 1942.00? Can I get it to do that?

    Thanks again :)

No, you will have to enter the full stop as in 19.42
Entering 194.2 will show up as 194.20

If you have lots of numbers to enter, press the num-lock key and use the decimal pad on the right of your keyboard.
