NTSC J games on North American PS3, possible?

hi there, im thinking on getting a couple of Japan-only games by the end of the year, but im not sure if its possible (the thread title is quite self-explanatory).

I have the 60GB-$500 version, which I heard is the best one regarding backwards compatibility.

I'm 99% sure that Japanese and American PS3 games are in the same region - the same goes for Bluray disks. You can't play Japanese PS2 or PS1 games in your American PS3 though.

I believe Wikipedia told me that PS3 games are not region locked.
