If people have to mine on their new gpu after buying it to "afford" it, then maybe they shouldn't be buying equipment they can't afford up front, or pay off in a reasonable time by simply budgeting.

You logic doesn't make any sense, you could buy a card and enjoy and get money from it. Why wouldn't you?

If you cant afford an item within your means, then don't buy said item. That's not flawed logic at all

I recently upgraded from a 3070 to 3080, and the 3080 runs a lot hotter which makes me worried about the life span of the card. I also have an aorus X570 ultra mobo and the memory slots are located right over the hottest spot ( about an inch)on the card. So I took the side window off and have a house fan blowing in on it. I know this is probably over kill but it actually heats up the room.

Unless it's running at a constant 83C+ you're fine as the gpu goes.
And if it is running at 83C+ all the time you've got bigger issues at play or a defective card.

Last week the weather was in the 80's and I don't have A/C so it was running around 81C but with the cooler weather it's 60C when it's just idling so to speak . I never had a card that has run so hot before, and like I said it makes me worried that the ram sticks will be affected.

mine never hit more than 67C while under load with ambient temp of 85F in my house this week, or if it did it wasn't while I was paying attention to RT overlay numbers.
I also have a big old FUMA 2 cooler with an extra fan just above the GPU (the almost touch even, that cooler is so big), so that may have something to do with it as it's probably help keep the gpu cool itself as well. Noticed it has raised my cpu temps a little bit while gaming now, but not drastically, approximately 5-7C at most.
Wait, what model do you have? EVGA FTW3 Ultra here, beastly heatsink with no stupid shroud covering it. Also in a Lian Li 215 Aircool with several extra fans for exhausting.
Also have the factory OC bios set with a stupid aggressive fan curve on it.

It makes no difference and, if anything, gaming GPUs wear out faster than mining GPUs.

I have an EVGA XC3 Utra, and your cooler sounds badass. My electric bill has gone up quite a bit with it, and I haven't seen a bill with a full month of use yet. I love it though, And have no buyers remorse. My tower is a phantex 400, nothing special but I did get it with 6 fans. With the 3080 I feel better with the side panel off for ventilation. I also don't want the other components (ram & cpu) to run hotter because of the card.

I'm dreading the power bill, but at the same time I guess I won't have to run the heat as high in the winter either now, that card dumps massive amounts of heat.
And really, as long as you don't have massive amounts of pet fur floating about, running with the side off and fan blasting on it is fine, had to run my K6 system that way during the summers.
But yeah, throughly impressed and pleased with the card so far, first time in 25+ years that I've been able to have a current gen high end model gpu (was usually either current gen but bottom tier, or prior gen mid tier) and it's very alien to me to not have to worry about how well a few will run, or what settings I'll have to reduce to get quality frames while not having the game look like total crap.

Not true. Mining isn't as taxing as what gaming is. I have a 3060Ti and I have made $500.00 AUD in the past two months and it is running at low temps and low voltage (120W) compared to if I was gaming with it. My only regret is that I didn't purchase another one at the time.

I am sure I read somewhere that these cards run hot (especially GigaByte) and you need to change the thermal pads and then they run a lot cooler? But you need to research this yourself for the correct information as this is what I have only read in a number of posts on different forums etc.

Thanks for the info, I never knew about the GPU needing thermal pads changed as a routine maintenance item, I looked at a couple of youtube uploads and it looks doable, and it also looks like something I could screw up on. I could write a book called," How to screw up easy fixes for *****s." I had a gigabyte 3070 that was sold with it already being overclocked which would make sense that they would run hotter. I recently bought a new evga 850w PSU and it was just before it came out about gigabyte psu's exploding. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than a smart shopper.

3700x, no oc.
Have plans for a zen3 jump at some point and the build will be pretty much set minus storage upgrades/swaps.
Of course they went up, because there was a crypto-aftershock from 20th of July. And it reached its peak right about now. That means virtual coins will start losing their value again, and some of the cryptominers will sell their cards. The prices should drop again later in September.

when I upgraded my GPU I also upgraded my 3600 to a 5600X which I was informed would make the FPS about 10% faster on a 3070, not sure what it comes out with the 3080. There is a a small bottle neck of 10% with the 5600X cpu and the 3080. I game at 1440P and I've read that the 3080 is under utilized, but I can say it's noticeably better than the 3070 that I upgraded from

I'm gonna go all in a drop a 5950x in it. Not really for any potential gains in gaming, but mostly because if AM4 is end of life (so to speak) I'm going to attempt to get as much use out of it as possible.
I'm on a 60Hz 4K TV for monitor currently anyway, though plan on a 27" 4K monitor to replace it with.
