NYPD to replace 36,000 Windows phones with iPhones by year's end

While a lot of us really wanted Windows phone to make it, we all pretty much knew it wouldn't. Google and Apple both have very well established phone OS's so to not go with one of those was a big risk. But when it comes to using tax payer dollars, few have the desire to make monetarily responsible decisions.

I wonder why do those phones have to be top of the line just to do simple basic tasks?

That's what public budget is for!
Who needs free college?
Methinks you'd like to have your phone, and go to college on it too.

Just think, if you could have back all the money you, (or most likely your family), have spent on your handsets, wireless service, and data overages, you'd have tidy nut to put toward yur book larnin'. :D

I phones are delicate.. will they be up to the job and will they have to put them in rugged cases. If so why don't they just get phones that are built rugged in the first place.... There are plenty of rugged android handsets out there that are way cheaper then the I phone.

The most important issue ignored. Android has a lot of faults, but specialty phones aren't one of them.

Gee, wonder why taxes in NYC are so high....crap like this is one shining example.
Fight back, move to North Dakota. Not only are the taxes cheap, but so is housing......, and best of all, car insurance!

Just because a moose might eat your phone if you drop it, and all you might get sometimes is one half a bar, is no reason to not plan a life there.

(In truth, I'm not so sure about the housing. The last insulation chart I saw recommended at least 12" in the roof. Insulation isn't as cheap as it once was, what with the lawsuits and (maybe), being made in America).

I see no reason they need the iPhone 8. That's just frivolous spending and a bad idea. Bleeding Edge tech is prone to issues, putting it in the hands of the police is just asking for trouble.

I would also think it would be less prone to maleware, since hackers tend to target what is in widespread use

I don't know, Captain, just too damn cold for me. Although, I can say one thing, you can put on more clothes, but you can only take off so much.

You just need flannel pajamas with button trap doors front and rear. That way you can get the missus or the pooping done, at your discretion of course.

As an IT guy, I've found things to work like this... If you want customizability, you go with Android. If you want it dummy-proof, you go with Apple. So if they're switching to ios, it's either because one guy spoke up and said "well I use apple products and they work fine for me" or the whole police office is too dumb to figure out Android. This decision was not only dumb but will be costly in the end. *shrugs*

I would not be surprised if it was the latter. I don't know how people can have issues with android but people somehow find a way to be confused.

Not really, it's indicative of how badly this incompetent clown Nadella is running M$ into the ground.

When you have a major, high profile client such as the NYPD using your phones, you don't summarily jump up and say, "tough sh!t guys, we're not supporting Windows 8.1 anymore, take Windows 10 or get lost".

And there goes that account, right over to Apple, the business model Nadella is so desperately, (and ineptly), trying to hijack!

I could see the reasoning as such: The iphone 7 is already a year old. It will, most likely, be getting 4 years of updates. The 8 will be brand new, and will get 5 years of updates. If your budget is grant based, you get whatever has the longest lifespan, because you dont always know when more money is coming.

I live in the midwest...the only time I was in NYC was for technical training from time to time. Best view was from the window of the airplane, LEAVING. ;)

A major issue still remains with that though, you are putting your faith in an untested platform. We are all aware that the latest tech often has birthing issues. It doesn't matter how long you think the platform will last because in reality no one has done real world testing of it's durability.

Started the widows phone thing with the HTC P4000 tytn,win5-6,,then to a HTC HD7 with win 7.then to the lumia 830 win 8-10.now going for the Alcatel Idol4S win 10, I've tried android,if you haven't tried windows phone ,ya shouldn't be talking failure, marketing is where it failed..M$ failed to get them out in the wild,Android was marketed heavily,as well IOS.

I went windows mobile because windows is successful on the pc. it's successful on the phone here.they sync so well.sold the missus on windows phone .I'm using her droid until my new win phone arrives,a galaxy s4 mini.which is about as much android as I can stomach.though I do like the new galaxy notes screen.overkill for a phone screen.
