Obsessive CPU usage in WinXP?

Well, you knocked my theory out. If the problem was not present when the system was cold(like being off all night) then I figured it might be an internal fault with the CPU (a changed value components that only faults out when hot) but being that it is still there but it is not there in safe mode, I tend to lean toward a configuration problem. Though it still could be a faulty component but it will be tough to find.

Try going into MSCONFIG and check on what is starting automatically. Next, check the registry under the following:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnce
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnceEx

Granted, I realize that both of what I am stating is the same thing, but just in case, check both the Registry and MSConfig.

Thanx guys, I don't think it is a virus though, as no ovirus checkers pick it up and I have had no other adverse side effects, since stopping it from automatically starting.

- I would have replied sooner but college has finally put up some DECENT security, that my l33t hacking skills :D can't get around. So I can't reply at college now :(

Do you have a NIC installed? If you do, do you have it set to get an IP from a DHCP Server? If you do have it set to get an IP, try setting the IP address manually.

It used to happen to me.

I would run window's update and download all the critical up-dates that you need for your operating system. it cleared up after i did.

One More Thing...

Sorry, you might also want to make sure you have the lastest DIXV installed if you have it.

i have the answer to your prayers !!!!

I just came across this problem myself and i to practically changed, altered and kicked the s*it out of my computer. Are you still having problems, if you are i will let you know how to rectify it. it is a long drawn out process but i was over the moon watching my processor usage keep falling all the time. I will watch out to see if you still need help. O.k.

Why don't you just go ahead and post it here, espically since you brought this thread back up after sitting peacefully for about a year and a half.

holy cheese this was a long time ago

I remember this.

The problem turned out to be a board that had slight static damage. The board was replaced and it was working again.

Hi there,
Thanks icewolf for the filemon url, I was wondering how I could discover what service.exe and a scvhost.exe were doing. They seemed to be writing and reading I/O's the most.
Anway,
I blew away everthing and started clean. Problem solved!!!
I guess that means it was not static on the mobo in my case.

i had the same problem.
i've searched some forums and found this answer.
it solved the problem.
dont know why the duration field has been set to show in the explorer. some updates ?

"I've noticed this happen to myself, in particular, in a folder of media files of rather large (multi-hundred-MB) size, when the 'Duration' field is displayed under Details. Explorer pegs out at 99% while searching each file ot get the duration, and doesn't stop if the window is closed before all files have their duration listed (which can take a long time with files that size). I believe turning off that detail for that folder will keep epxlorer from pegging out and leaking memory like a dribble-glass."
