Office 2002 take FOREVER to open file.

hi. not sure if this is an office problem or a windows xp problem, but here it goes.

my work computer was recently switched to a brand new dell optiplex gx280. office 2002 is installed.

my problem is:

whenever i try to open a file using File -> Open, and then use the drop down Look In menu atop, it takes FOREVER to switch directories or drives. i am currently connected to two network drives, but even if i use the method described above to open a file on my local drive, it takes FOREVER.

hehe....forever is the operative word here. ;]

any suggestions? advice? help? no one in my company can figure out what's wrong.......so i turn to the best message board!

Click Start/Run and type services.msc and click OK.
Click on the Standard tab at the bottom, and find the Indexing Service
Rightclick it, select Properties, click on Stop and change the startup type to Disable.
You may need to reboot for it to work.
