PC Freezes/Restarts all the time

More Specifically

For the complaint - At this time it is helpful to know specifically what was occurring and what changes have been made recently.

A freeze without a related error report indicates 'no mouse movement', 'ctl-alt-del' signal did not work, and restart was forced by the power switch. Is this accurate?

What applications were open at the time? What was the last action attempted or completed? What is most suspect?

In your first post, you asserted the health of the computer. Troubleshooting styles vary considerably: question recent changes or new applications; update everything, then re-check; reduce the number of extraneous startup applications to find the culprit; and fix the known problems identified by Bobbye.

At this time, if the problems identified by Bobbye have been addressed, then the next layer of the onion is presented.

Agreed. Telling us you had a freeze with no particulars is no enough information. You need to let us know exactly what you were doing a the time. If you have dealt with the Errors found in the Event Viewer and are still having intermittent 'freezes' with no corresponding Error Events, then it becomes even more important to know if it was happening with a particular program, application, or what.

Didn't install anything new, was doin my normal work since when it was going good.

Suddenly froze when I was using Soul Seek, and Google Sketchup.

So it froze 2 times now.

And still no errors.

This is getting frustrating.

You were asked some specific questions by rf6647 in Post #26. Please answer those.

Have you resolved each of the Error events that I outlined for you?

Please tell is how much installed RAM you have in the Windows XP Pro. Google Sketchup is a pretty intensive graphics program. Here are the system requirements- do you meet them?

http://www.google.com/support/sketchup/bin/answer.py?answer=36208

SoulSeek is a file sharing program. That leaves you open to a lot of things. And if you have too many programs open at the same time, you may be exceeding the available RAM or- if a laptop, heat could be the issue.

4GB RAM.

My PC can handle these kind of programs.

and like I said before, it freezes even if im not doing anything or opened any program.

Okay, let's recap: but first, How do you know it freezes if you're not doing anything?

1. You have enough RAM.
2. The motherboard and hard drive are okay.
3. The system is 'clean' but you have been running an AV program that no longer is supported, therefore, no updates
4. You haven't installed SP3.
5. You've been having this problem for a long time.
6. You've handled all the causes of the Error Events.
7. You've ruled out a heat issue.
8. System also 'freezes' when in Safe Mode.
9. The PC is taking excessive time to both start up and shutdown.
10. You have acknowledged problems with Photoshop. .
11. The 'freezes' appear to be totally random.
12. You are using at least one file sharing program.

What's left?
1. Do you have and have you run at least 2 spyware/adware programs, updating right before the scans- before the recent install of AVG8?
2. Have all power sources been checked?

I went threw this thread And I saw that Bobbye said you ruled out malware how is this if you did not ask for anything like a hijackthis to review or ask him to run a full system scan if you like I can check a hijackthis log for you to make sure there is nothing bad on your computer although this may not be related to malware

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I also booted in Safe Mode, and left pc open without doing anything to it, and it froze after some time.

I came back to PC, and it was poofed.

---

1- I just removed AVG8..thought it might be from this program.
so far it's running good, but will try using PC without it for 2 days, then will re-install to confirm.

2- all good man.

oh forgot about this.

I just did it.

should I post the logfile here?

Thank you Daniel. I agree with you. My 'list' was of the things we have been told. I added the comment about not having AVG updates, and noticed no mention had been made of any spyware scan. Now it appears he is running with no AV at all!

If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Combofix is a very powerful tool so please do NOT do anything without instruction

For some reason, I'm not getting notice of replies timely. The one I have dated yesterday, 7/23 is a print out of the hijack log. Is this from one of the posts you deleted? I'm puzzled how AVG7 could have been updating when it is no longer supported.

the 2 posts I deleted were for hijackthis logfile, but daniel asked me to attach it.

why so hard to understand man? I was using it when it was supported.

scanned PC and was cleand, then disabled.

then posted this thread, and you told me to install AVG 08.

I did and scanned. all clean.

but then PC freezing occured again, and I removed it.

but then it freezed again today...so it's not from AVG 08 or AVG 07.

I'm going to let Daniel handle your logs. There are still some things than need to go. But I have questions on the following:

You're running the following and I'm wondering if they are contributing to the problem:
O4 - Startup: 4t Tray Minimizer.lnk = C:\Program Files\4t Tray Minimizer\4t-min.exe
4t Tray Minimizer which will minimize programs on the Taskbar to 'give you more room'. Wouldn't this be en easy way to have an abundance of programs running at the same time, that you may not notice, but which would be consuming the RAM?

Another process: NLClient.exe is NetLimiter 2 from Locktime Software. It controls and monitors internet traffic and is designed for use with Windows. Real-time traffic measurement. How are you using this?

You also mentioned you disabled VM Ware, but there are still processes running, being loaded at start::
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vmware-tray] J:\VMWare\Installed Files\vmware-tray.exe
Services are still starting up: right click> Properties> set to Disabled> Stop the Services:
O23 - Service: VMware Agent Service (ufad-ws60) - VMware, Inc. - J:\VMWare\Installed Files\vmware-ufad.exe
O23 - Service: VMware DHCP Service (VMnetDHCP) - VMware, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vmnetdhcp.exe
O23 - Service: VMware Virtual Mount Manager Extended (vmount2) - VMware, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\VMware Virtual Image Editing\vmount2.exe
O23 - Service: VMware NAT Service - VMware, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vmnat.exe

While these questions are based on what I saw in the HijackLog, NOTE that they are not addressing malware.
